Daily Show Roundup
The Daily Show was enjoyable tonight--at least the first segment that dealt with news (Samantha Bee's calendar was iffy at best, and the Christina Applegate interview was not worth watching).
Anyway, about tonight's show.
As I've said before, and I'll say again, Jon Stewart has the best political analysis on television. Though I get most of my info online, The Daily Show is my only source of television news.
Here are a couple of examples from tonight:
Today, Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge issued a somewhat vague and uninformative warning against a possible terrorist attack on election day.
I tried to come up with something funny to say about it, but I think it was a no-go (in my mind, it was something like "only people in ethnically diverse communities and areas like Palm Beach with lot's of old Jewish voters should worry. There's no concern for good Christian voters in Ohio or other areas of Florida, for example"... I guess that's why I don't write for The Daily Show").
Here was Jon Stewart's analysis of what Ridge was really trying to say with the fake scare tactics:
"Be afraid enough to not vote for John Kerry, but too afraid not to vote for President Bush."
Later in the show, Stewart talked about the Ken Lay indictment, and then looked at the long-standing relationship between Bushs 41 & 43 and Kenny Boy Lay.
While showing a picture of the three compatriots, Stewart said:
"I don't have a joke here... I just know they hate it when we talk about it."
-----
When I see a show like this one, with such a good half of political analysis followed by such a stupid interview with a ditzy celebrity, I only wish that they let Stewart keep the show only political. Nevertheless, the only thing I can say is that everyone should watch the show, and additionally, let their friends watch it too.
I truly believe that textbooks and scholarly articles in media analysis journals in the future will devote whole chapters to the impact that The Daily Show has during this period of diluted, crappy television news. Viva la Daily Show!!!
